Happy Birthday Blog

This journal (we don’t say blog any more that’s so 00’s) this journal has been going since 2008. It started with the collapse of the SevCom forums, which had in turn followed the end of the Severed Heads mailing list and that came from the Twister 2 BBS fidonet. If you include all the formats it’s 30 years old. Happy birthday you ocean of verbiage.

I’ve never been that keen on the past. I tend to neglect it. But as an old man I begin to see the worth – I thought by now we would have progressed into a more effective form of communication. Instead we have TikTok (the childcare centre) and Facebook (the aged care centre). Severed Communications wasn’t all that bad, maybe I should keep it. Duuuuur!

I said neglect. When I shut down tomellard.com (which was about slapping my own face WAKE UP DAMN YOU) I didn’t back up the blog properly. I mean, I did the backup but yeah yeah that’ll do, don’t care anyway. So of course when I tried to restore it here it shat itself. For months now I’ve been getting the bits of paper out of the shredder and using glue to get the pages back. What you see here is the work in progress – currently 175 pages of blah blah.

I don’t think everything here is worth reading. But there’s some moments which are still relevant. The back story of the HH Game. The time Wednesday Night Is Garbage Night started featuring weird cassettes. The Oops Event, which led to a whole series about the University of The North Pole media studies department. The endless bitching about VIVID Festival and Kraftwerk. The birth of the Synthesiser Man Cave. And so many times I said I can’t do this Severed Heads any more… which eventually led to the shut down that lost it all.

Maybe just start at the beginning.

The only way is up. You and Me etc.
