And then, we played Sydney.
There really wasn’t a way to know how this would go. It was the last night of a series of young people doing all sorts of things from speed metal to saxophone echoes. That was the best thing about it really – no matter how old you are – you are anxious – and you hope for the best. We were just part of the pack like it was in the 80s, in the same general geography and company. As it turned out – they turned out – and no awful mistakes ruined the night. Well not many.

The audience crossed eras. Definitely people that had been there in year one. Definitely people who were not yet born in year one … and those between. Thinking about it, I’d venture that because it wasn’t a ‘gothic’ or ‘EBM’ or ‘industrial’ night but rather a mix of everything – that made it work. Overseas we tend to be adopted into one of these categories. Here I guess we were just a Sydney band. (The Jazz Cafe gig also worked because … jazz!)
Backstage everything was pretty messy and full of cheer. It was a tiny space particularly when a full band came off stage so I’m grateful for all the solo acts. But there was a lot of shared respect and although we might have been spoiled just a bit (there’s a cocktail called a Mick Jagger that I might have met a few too many times that evening) there was no room for snobbery.
Resting…
I am prone to saying Last Gig. I always mean it the way that you don’t want to keep eating a bag of chips. You say you shouldn’t, and then you do, and that goes around and around. My wife told me to say ‘resting’. It conveys that something is momentarily tired, but it’s not so negative. On the other hand resting lets the people be free: Stewart has other things to do, with other bands. I have a lot of 3D modelling that I really should practice and master. There’s an occasional Severed Sound System that could happen when a park is open on a sunny day.
If you could not come then many of the videos are up on YouTube. Like this one:
Yes please to more Severed Soumd Systems! Very enjoyable…
My first thought watching the video, that Daft Punk finally collaborated with the
Brothers Quay, only more earthy.
