Malls

Time Out from being creative – time to take in some inspiration … I’m enthralled by malls and quite don’t know why.

Surely this would entertain anybody: we visited a mall today and there was not a soul there. Staff were placed at great distances like a first person DOOM game. One group were setting up a new coffee machine. Would we like to try this new kitchen device? Yes please. We carried our coffees further into the endless labyrinth. It was dead silent. Huge and I mean stupidly monstrous televisions. Heaters with fake log fires (a fan of these, was tempted). Bedding. A kind of liminal Disneyland. Severance with kitchenware.

It does align with my interest in 3D game spaces…kind of. 10/10 would visit again.

I’ve said it before – I love ANKO. Although it kind of belongs to the American companies K-MART and TARGET it’s locked into Australia (tried Canada, died quickly, but is branching into the Philippines). ANKO stands for A New Kind Of. A new kind of what? A new kind of absolutely anything you could think of.

You know the film Repo Man. You know their joke about generic goods.
You might think that I’m being tongue in cheek. I‘m not!

I swear there is nothing that ANKO cannot make for a good price. Nothing. Do not for a moment think I am being ironic or smug about this – I have a genuine adoration for this Australian cultural icon. They explore every corner of the universe, fearlessly coming up with things that you never knew you were missing in your life.

I will have to show you the studio toy collection. And then there’s slime… The grand war between America and Switzerland. But we’ll get to that later…

I was quite surprised to learn recently that Kmart is still thriving in Australia long after it has disappeared in the USA. “Blue Light Special” was a phrase I heard often back then. The last time I went to the mall that I frequented growing up it was like stepping into Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, eerily silent and devoid of consumer zombies. It found a second life as the mall used in the Stranger Things show. It is completely shut down now and slated to be repurposed for mixed use.
