Bought in a Singaporean market around 1973, a bootleg cassette of Golden Voice of Wong Shiau Chen – although exactly which one is hard to know as there was FOURTEEN VOLUMES all with the same name. Given the way the tape runs out halfway through songs I’d guess it is all of them and none.
As is usual in this post modern wonderland what was once a mysterious purchase of antiquity can be now be found online.
It remains a little mysterious – her backing was in-house band The Stylers. Damn, their logo is very familiar and it’s got to be on another cassette somewhere in this heap, the Stylers were all over everything back when – credited with 2000 albums!
One reason to make these cassettes available is to declare some of the sound sources and inspirations I’ve been using over the years – an analysis to explain the synthesis. I have a particular like of the nasty over-driven sound of these bootleg cassettes, which is part of my growing up. But you CAN find better copies elsewhere.
Tape number two in the ‘my God there’s drawers full of this stuff’ series. The Cassette.
