The tweets of 2014

Hello. This page reproduces tweets I made in the year 2014. Where there were multiple tweets in one day all the words are joined together, with asterisks marking a change of topic. It tries to remove all the wrapping around each tweet to let the words flow more quickly, if a bit scatterbrained. Many but not all links are dead. I will continue to clean up this mess and make notes as time permits.

*I give up. Without clean samples of FIZMO wavetables I just can’t emulate the thing. PureMagnetik screwed it by cutting the sounds into 64 or so uneven waves that don’t even crossfade. Least fun jigsaw. So it’s off until an owner volunteers.
*Fuck. Guess what just got sent to me. THE POWER OF BITCHING COMPELS YOU.
But will Sheer Zed favourite this tweet?

*Today being my ‘HEVC research day’, let’s start with the Mona Lisa encoded in 140 bytes – a tweet text. http://t.co/X2fcePkkJp
*Hell, now back on doom9 forums after 5 years, the same people that were killing each other over H264 development are still there.

*Netflix’s algorithm knows 76,897 film genres and has evolved a love of one actor for unknown ghostly reasons. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/01/how-netflix-reverse-engineered-hollywood/282679/
This year’s lecture on film genres is going to be different, let me tell you. Also thrilled my doctorate project seems much less crazy than this. Hey maybe I’m doing the right thing…

*Every time I read a panic about decline in humanities it’s closely followed by a panic about decline in science. Make up your bloody mind.

Jan 8, 2014
*Yeah, why aren’t 18 years olds choosing a degree on the basis of maybe completing a doctorate in 2022? You’d think that’d pull them right in. Especially as every one of their role models has a PhD.

*6 hour grind of Jitter and SQL today & I have a headache that eats entire planets. Time out gotta drink. Some people just aren’t coders 🙁 Growing up with old school lines of “do this, then do that” I have trouble with data flowing diagrammatically all over a page. Too old.

*Mary Hallock Greenewalt was a genius of visual music. She was also an insufferable egotist & her pompous book is murdering me. “Another engraving of the author inventor, staring lovingly at her own reflection, which won a international gold medal for beauty.” Not sure why 20th c. visual musicians are such a pack of vain pretentious gits. Apart from Wilfred, he was cool.
*I didn’t so much finish that Max patch as re-create the fight scene from “They Live”. But that patch is wearing the sunglasses.

Jan 15, 2014
*In news just to hand: Scott Morrison has sewn his lips together in a so-far peaceful demonstration against freedom of information.
*”The Cray was THE supercomputer, and not a single historian… can show you the working object itself.” http://t.co/DxuZ9ZSRUe thru @acb
*Kim Dotcom launches his new Internet Party, promising 20 chickens in every pot. Plus 10 hamburgers and a tub of lard. Dotcom will not be supplying the meals himself, requiring party members to share them on torrents. The NZ Internet party was partly inspired by the AUS Wikileaks party, which syphoned votes to a billionaire mining company magnate.

*Dear person that underlined half of the library book I’m trying to study. I hope you failed.

‘1 symptom of the ossification of modernism is the shift from the avant-garde to the underground – retreat to the fortress of art about art’. Edward Lucie-Smith kicking modern art’s (& “the underground’s”) fat butt. Next to a pic of Sol Lewitt’s work. If you describe yourself as ‘underground’ then you are positioning yourself against a goal or antagonist.

Kids informing me about the latest Retrowave 80’s music which apparently sounds like SEGA cartridges. OK kids that’s cool, thanks. Apparently the soundtrack of “Hotline Miami” is entirely authentic for the whole period.

Baroness Hildegard Anna Augusta Elisabeth Rebay von Ehrenwiesen. Mother of the Guggenheim. Theosophist of course. They Live. The success of Richter, Fischinger and McLaren is cited endlessly. But Hilla Rebay is why these names keep coming up. Money, lots of money.
*I seriously don’t understand why KORG are selling another MS20 as an IKEA flat pack. Does snapping together make it phatter? However Gadget iOS toy looks like the weekend is gonna be fine. KORG Gadget looks colourful but most sounds are familiar. Lot of wobble DJ noises. Can multiples of gadgets. Needs reboot. Good not wow.

*Celebrated Australia Day by falling down a flight of stairs, and once piled at the bottom cursing the day I was born. Was shoes not booze. Had it been booze then more appropriate for white Australian culture, but fate decides these things.
*Neighbours are treating me to the JJJ countdown. Led Zeppelin clones seem to winning over Nirvana clones. I’m not being won over myself. I know it’s pop music but bloody hell the melodies are as predictable as slasher films. Whatever is playing now sounds like Skyhooks. Jesus.

The ‘Fine’ in Fine Art is the same as the ‘Fine’ in rap lyrics. On one hand it’s Vangelis playing a whole orchestra at once. OTOH generic film orchestra music needs to die.

Nice to see a legendary composer do that thing where they uselessly twiddle the piano key left and right.

*Hey, any young artist need an ugly old academic to ghost write their music? Special Price.
Seriously though, this would be perfectly normal in the Art Industry. Artist does the flamboyance, workers make the art. Tactics of disruption required: e.g. You are not allowed to use any percussion. You must include one field recording you made yourself.

*Must be Sunday cause my neighbour is blaring the fuck out of the Bruce Springsteen Live DVD which is his only musical possession in life. Far as I can tell Bruce Springsteen is a guy that yells YEAH!, ORIGHT! and leads mass rally kindergarten sing a longs with whistling solos.
Don’t know if he punches the air, but it would make sense. With a pan across of field of lit red/white/blue cigarette lighters. What are these long tirades between singalongs? Sounds like Hitler meets Foghorn Leghorn. Fuck Bruce Springsteen.

*That was a terrible, tedious lazyass album, and reading a book about it would be like punching yourself repeatedly in the face. “Selected Ambient Works 2” made the best use of the CD format by allowing you to skip over the tracks before microwaving it.
*Couple of hundred thousand drunk people about to descend on my neighbourhood for G&L Mardi Gras. Better shut the door. The folks on the floats aren’t a problem. But the audience is much the same one as for NYE, the Footy or a book burning.

*Such a 21st century war; troops enter Ukraine, RUS stock exchange + currency plummets, Putin faces economic 5th column; makes sad face. Rather than atom bombs, the blows are being landed on corporate profits, which might end war rather quickly. http://t.co/oeevjDxtIF

The Lemon has arrived! It’s in the original box as if it were left to fade in a shop window. All the parts are there. It’s very odd. Lemon technical manual. Pretty sure that knob 2 is labelled “Turn this to fuck shit up”.

*Writing a lecture on earworms, some very curious findings in the literature. A correlation b/w schizotypy and daft punk stuck in your head. From what I read so far, time of day of the infection matters more than a particular quality of the music, although disputed.
Correction: no corr. b/w schizotypy and # of infections, rather the duration is longer due to ‘ironic mental control’ = phrase of the week. Only 2 sig. structural features of earworms; long note durations and small intervals. Essentially: sung lyrics.

The world needs more installation video art based around slowly dripping taps. Several hundred pieces just aren’t enough. Oh and don’t forget some slow motion. Can’t be real video art without really overstated grandiose slow motion footage. Do you preserve 1st year students from bad art or do you inoculate them with it? Serious question.

Oh great, another time dealer wants to sell me a fix. “I got you some 1980’s, very nice, you like, 10 inch 12 inch, old times yes?” Sometimes I feel I let people down by not dying 20 fucking years ago. Good artist, lie down, play dead.

Cheer up! You could always be an aspiring actor. Big queue of them across the road from my place all hoping to be an extra in a TVC.
Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next! Next!

May 22, 2014
Next morning the aspiring actors are still lining up in the street to be extras in a TVC. Nearby – garbage bags full of hope. I’d take a picture but I’d need a backpack full of release forms and dollar coins. Besides, not funny. Well, a little. Its funny. The place across the road where all the people were lining up is now a fresh pork pie shop. Pretty tasty actually. They have second hand clothing as well.

Hey. @medicalrecs posted a baby photo on Facebook. But I don’t don’t go to Facebook so I don’t know yet.

A man had died at the VIVID festival. Obviously this illegal rave must be shut down. Drugs must have been involved. NSW property developers are horrified by yet another Anna Wood type death. The only safe thing to do is to turn all venues into apartments.

Having conducted an interactive survey at the local pub, the soundtrack of Grease is greatest artwork of mankind. Ah hah ah hah.
Essentially, unless your artwork is on par with the soundtrack of Grease, you fail and should go do something else. Ah hah ah hah.
I shall deliver my findings to the Federal Arts Ministry, proposing a cross media Grease based metric for community arts engagement. The week’s lectures: 1st year: The Transit of Venus & Mechanical Moving Image. 2nd year: Reenactment: The Thin Blue Line + Kaspar Hauser.

*My opinion on this extremely complex political, cultural and gender based issue in less than 140 letters without just being a slogan is that
*Reading Norman Lebrecht’s “Companion to 20th Century Music”, cheering every time he connects his fist with a deserving face.
Acid House: “exceptionally noisy all night parties for impressionable adolescents in respectable middle class suburbs.
Academicism: “Mid-century dictatorship of compositional policy … by professional composers at East Coast colleges.”
Skryabin: “wrote perfectly normal music while proclaiming himself Messiah… overdosed on Theosophy and was rightly regarded a crackpot”.
*I think this became rare and obscure the day it came out. Mostly based on Eric Pershing’s Distorted Reality CDROM.

*Just learned about Haydn’s use of graphical scores mid 18th century, how most textbooks completely wrong and this doctorate gonna kill me. Every frikken book I read is digging holes in every other frikken book I read until it’s a grey mush of bullshit. Jakob Engel noted limits in music ‘sampling’ in 1780. He argues against imitation of sounds and instead for creating subjective impressions.

You have to ask yourself why large companies keep creating robots, which are in most cases utterly useless. As role models? The same company that owns Boston Dynamics wants you to wear the funny glasses. ‘Tech writers’ applaud, understanding nothing. Or maybe they intuit that the panopticon need not be a building for you to watch yourself. And they approve. Which is why they are scum. http://t.co/0wufpbHUjx

That is one hell of a big cassette insert. Going to have to push hard.

It’s high time this photograph appeared in an academic journal. High time.

I don’t care if this is being hyped to hell and back it still rules. Music videos without music.

I’ll never know why I deserve a long stream of ‘hilarious’ hatred over twitter just because I make music. Anyway, blocked, game over.
OK the prisms are here. Newton or Goethe? Who is right?
Not looking good for poor old Goethe. There’s red on the outside of that yellow.

I am too old and blind to solder these days. Fixed the TX but it weren’t pretty to watch. And fuck Jaycar battery holders don’t fit.

To see manly men Tony Abbott and Vladimir Putin ‘shirtfronting’ each other on live TV – I would buy a TV set for that I would.
I got a lazy 5 bucks that Vlad would kick-box Tones in the Budgie Smugglers and it would all be over in the first minute. Who wants to bet?

Somebody has to break the news to this guy eventually (that it’s worth about $150).

*Although not labelled, this surely is Hector’s colour music machine, Sydney 1928. Man to left is probably him. The piano is attached to a bank of relays at centre, and yes, the coloured lights were set into that top-tastic diorama.

*Poor old bloody Gough. But you are free now.
Gough Whitlam did in three years what some governments haven’t managed in the last 50.
Mind you, Menzies was such a clueless sloth that there was about 50 years worth of things to do.
*Followed by 3 comedy animal accounts (inc. 2x grumpy cats) all in one minute. In the 2nd minute they were all at the butchers. One of grumpy cats had a hilarious joke about ‘sluts’. Oh yes that’s just what I was wanting. Thank you. Die.

Last time I bought headphones they didn’t come from what looks like a mascara stand. “Have anything not designed for 14yr old girls?”
“Actually, got something other than Monsterskullbeats in pink?”

Nov 3, 2014
@rasurc
Yes, I agree but refer back that picture of the woman chair I posted earlier. That’s considered OK. Dangerous tactic here.
Thank god for ‘gamers’, they make vintage synthesiser collectors sound less creepy. Apart from ‘gearslutz’ = creep central.

Do the people who design corporate databases actually try them with real people or do they just read Mein Kampf for cool ideas?
Just spent the last half hour navigating an Oracle product to ask a simple question, may as well been playing a 1st person shooter.

What gets me is that even by tax cheating and stock dumping Amazon still can’t make a profit. All they do is poison everything else.

Uh oh. Complicated email from my UK rights holder about “monetising” YouTube videos. I think I’ll just give in at this point. It looks like AWAL will collect on all those YT ‘fan’ videos. I guess I can live with anyone who is polite enough to ask before they start. If sound is a material, then it differs from music which is an arrangement, seeming to cut through much argument. http://t.co/9JmIEuouDn
I wonder if vinyl and hardware and other condensations of sound into the physical is not an anxious retreat to the visible, where I am quite happy for sound to have no comparisons and just be itself. These days we fear the virtual like we used to fear ghosts. Everything has to have an ‘authentic’ tangible basis: robots instead of renders. Everyone knows that modulars sound better with wooden ends on the rack.

About 3 hours wasted because Macs without a physical DVD drive won’t play disc images and give a spurious error. Thanks you pricks. How about an alert that says ‘we’ve disabled this feature on current models’. Instead of our IT trying to solve the fake error alert.

Just seen the prizes for tomorrows screening. Going to be some insanely happy students by Saturday morning. Two paid animation internships. Top film prize is from Adobe and Wacom. 6pm at the Chauvel on Oxford Street & I have ACCESS ALL ALCOHOL. Not the projectionist this year!

Sorry for bad vibes. Had another creative idea shot down because they are flying in the famous American artist instead. Being on work leave just confronts me with all the people who are getting on with being creative, instead of paid to talk about it. Journalists interviewing journalists about being somewhere near terrorist who wasn’t a terrorist and shut up already you pack of ghouls. Here’s a headline: “Nut case in Sydney kills four less people than nut case in Philadelphia same day, but had a FLAG!”

One great thing about research is every famous ‘pioneer’ I find turns out to be at least 20 years after the real forgotten person. Tracing so called “Oramics” (1957), back now with Arseny Avraamov in 1930. Although, maybe Rossiné’s Optophonic Piano of 1916.
