January

January has usually been the most productive time in this house. At one time that meant getting ready for the Big Day Out festival that took place around January 26th. It would also be the time when the university was closed and not yet demanding my teaching or management preparation. Neither of these things remain but leave a feeling of motion and dedication. For which I am grateful, knowing that a void waits for the unwary.

I’ve already announced the Séance which will be looming in about three weeks. Months of effort have gone into that and I’m resigned to it going out into the world come hell or high water. It will probably garner a bit of interest from a select audience followed by howling and whining from all the people who couldn’t be bothered and demand that it be put up on YouTube. I put Séance 1 up about year after the show. This time I don’t think I can bother shining people’s shoes for free. Thing is – making all that material is putting media in the bank for later.

The ✈︎ Inflight web site has been broken for over a year – very happy to say it’s now working again. The previous plugin had to be replaced every year by subscription and the damn paid update would not be accepted by the host site because security blah – whatever – I now have one that doesn’t do that goddamn subscription bullshit.

There is talk of a mini-album based on tracks from the Op series. This is not unexpected – after all it’s been about twenty years since that came out – the least time it takes for a piece of music to ferment.

Two meetings this month. First was a business meeting which (for example) set out the spending priorities for what might be worthwhile projects. e.g. is it worth looking again at Blue Ray discs for ATMOS music? (just keep an eye on it for the moment). Is there worth in making a printed book? (not until online is completely sorted). More challenging was an artistic meeting in which hard scrutiny was applied to our enthusiasm. What is the current best practice? How does that critique the ideas we are developing? For example my Luna project has been in development for years but does it still carry the ideas and excitement in 2024? (It’s a linear story slowly falling out of currency) What are other people doing that’s artistically vital? Has ‘immersion’ failed to launch? (Some examples yes, but others still valid).

Of course out there is some random thing, making its way at high speed right into our path…
