Spent this weekend working on level 1, manufacturing soundtracks and building tape recorders. I’ve got into a muddle between photo realistic machines and more cartoon like toy recorders. I guess at some point I’ll work out a way to get the two into harmony.
Would’ve got a lot more done except I tried buying a 3D model of an aircraft for a related project. It cost $120 and it’s shit. I mean, good to have all the proportions worked out but bloody hell they could have least made sure that the polygons actually lined up without holes. Most of Saturday wasted retouching the damn thing, followed by experiments that got some difficult renders down from 21 minutes a frame to about 4 minutes. And yes, a related project. No, can’t tell yet.
I’ve decided to make level 1 an excerpt that will open in the Unity web player and if they want the whole game then it’s a download. I’m just not confident that the whole thing should be streamed, or more to the point I’m just not experienced enough to risk it. I’m now being asked for technical specifics by the web site & it’s my instinct to aim low. Duck and cover.
The good news is that the tracker MODs work as advertised and quite long slabs of audio like numbers stations can be compacted down that way. But there’s some really long bits of sound design that will have to be streamed as OGG and it’s getting near the point where we have to find out how many streams can be served at once. In the USA we’ll send from SDF. In Australia we’ll have one of the largest (the largest?) media sites hosting – I think it’ll be all right.
In case you didn’t know today was supposed be the second coming according to the-end.com. It wasn’t (big surprise) but it was a wonderful source of gobbledegook that has been captured as source material. Nothing like the Armageddon for cool sound bites.
