Dogfood/Sevcom is lucky to have several partner labels, which reproduce vinyl editions of our early albums. We were first contacted by Dark Entries in San Francisco, but I was under the wrong impression that they were a goth label (the name!). We instead started with Medical Records from Seattle, although I quickly realised my mistake and Dark Entries have been our friends for some time now. We have had a few deals with European labels, but America is our main presence. In each case the effort is to provide good quality reproductions without a stupid second hand price.
In most cases I have digital backups of the master tapes I made on the SONY PCM-701ES back in 1985. The master tapes that we sent to labels were usually dubs from one open reel to another. These re-issues are from the absolute masters, and in many cases include practices and demo takes that were made to cassette. From 1985 onwards the albums were directly recorded to digital and soon edited that way as well.
In general the covers are based on the original artwork, with some adjustments made for the extra music provided on the 2LP versions. I do the layout for the Medical reissues, very carefully working from the original copies that I own. Dark Entries have their own art director that keeps them close to original but still in their own label identity. Futurismo and Panavision have followed their own design ideas. But in every case we all work to make an excellent object.
