It was short lived as the software source disappeared soon after – replaced by a cooking blog. It wasn’t just the CS30 – this was an Aladdin’s cave of emulated synthesisers – several hundred of them.

So how did one person create so many weird and wonderful mutations of hardware machines – and why? There’s not been much discussion of the project. The author at one point provided a statement:

These were created initially for my own use and amusement and I make no claim that they actually sound like the hardware synths they are emulations of / based on / inspired-by, for none of them use analog-modeling oscillators or filters.
Again, my aim with these was to create a free way to experience the interesting signal and control structures of these synths, not to fool anyone into thinking they are sound-alikes.

The point here is not to replicate hardware but to experience their way of working – the flow of signal – the choices of pathways and detours. Especially – what happens if you cross bred two or more keyboards into a new breed. Like any real experiment there are many successes and failures. I’m keen on this approach – like visiting an unfamiliar city.

This is an Ensoniq SQ-80 – except with knobs. Which you might see as quite the idea.

Let me immediately disappoint some readers – all of these are Windows only. They’re made with Windows software and that is that. The oscillators are not of the original machines. Some instuments are 32-bit, some are 64-bit. Most are sketches, oddities, half-baked. But if you wanted to play with a Yamaha CS30 keyboard you have the opportunity.

This is the sort of thing that just makes my head spin.

I’ll soon be reviewing a few of the best examples – out of hundreds…

The best place to get the whole damn lot at once is via a FaceBook page.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/freevstplugins/posts/kevin-brown-kb-plugins-recently-retired-completely-from-the-scene-and-deleted-hi/2793332907488442/

A while ago I posted a review of a Yamaha CS30 VST made by K Brown.
