They make me cry and I\u2019m not thinking of bonnie Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/bagpies.jpg?resize=386%2C269&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1715\" width=\"386\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/bagpies.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/bagpies.jpg?resize=300%2C209&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/bagpies.jpg?resize=400%2C279&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three reasons why a vocoder might be acceptable &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are Kraftwerk or YMO.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are old-school vocoding a sound with another sound.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is no third reason.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s true that vocoding was initially developed as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homer_Dudley\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homer_Dudley\" target=\"_blank\">a means to transmit voice<\/a> efficiently over a distance, and therefore is attuned to vocal elements and frequencies. However it is a general principle in synthesis &#8211; <em>any sound<\/em> can be vocoded by another &#8211; which is what I mean by &#8216;old-school&#8217;. For example there&#8217;s been a fair amount of drum machines run through vocoders &#8211; but there&#8217;s no reason why it should not be considered part of synthesis in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On some <a href=\"https:\/\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/e-mu-proteus-2000-%f0%9f%a7%bb%f0%9f%a7%bb%f0%9f%a7%bb\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">synthesisers<\/a> you can find <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/vital-%f0%9f%a7%bb%f0%9f%a7%bb%f0%9f%a7%bb%f0%9f%a7%bb%f0%9f%a7%bb\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1245\" target=\"_blank\">vowel filters<\/a> which approach this effect, or better <a href=\"https:\/\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/apple-alchemy\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"317\">spectral filters<\/a> that can hold a complex signal. Less hardware machines allow patching of synthesis through a vocoder stage. With some careful planning you can vocode one layer of KORG&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/?page_id=189\">RADIAS<\/a> with another &#8211; which sounds impressively horrible. The Radias also has remnants of the ill fated <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/fs1r\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"277\" target=\"_blank\">Yamaha FS1r<\/a> &#8211; storing &#8216;vocal phrases&#8217; as vocoded articulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:28% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"758\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/102693534-03-01.jpg?resize=600%2C758&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1746 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/102693534-03-01.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/102693534-03-01.jpg?resize=237%2C300&amp;ssl=1 237w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/102693534-03-01.jpg?resize=400%2C505&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><em>The robot voice has been around since the 1939 World&#8217;s Fair. Do you really want to sound like you are from the Thirties?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately manufacturers follow fashion, and that being the robot voice a majority of synthesisers have a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nilamox.com\/mancave21\/microfreak\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"405\" target=\"_blank\">specific mode<\/a> where a microphone modulates synthesis to make yet <em>another<\/em> robot voice, which then reinforces the basic idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s another form of sound design called <strong>Phase Vocoding<\/strong> which requires extensive calculation. The most obvious use of this technique is in time stretching and pitch shifting, but there&#8217;s a wide variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundhack.com\/pvoc\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.soundhack.com\/pvoc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">possible synthesis effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vocoders are the synthesiser version of bagpipes.
